BOOKING A PLACE

  • Full residential delegates – book via this link
    • Places are limited to one delegate per Baring funded organisations.
    • A limited number of additional self funded delegate places are available for Baring funded organisations – the cost is £600 per person (at max – we will seek to reduce if possible) with travel self-funded.
    • Whilst we will accept bookings from delegates who are able to attend only part of the residential, we strongly encourage you to stay for the whole residential.
  • Day delegates – book via this link (places are limited, please book ASAP)
    • Travel and lunch costs will be covered if you are from a Baring funded organisation.
    • Please note that (as above) costs are only covered for one delegate per organisation.
  • We’ll be asking those attending the full residential to meet us at the Midlands Arts Centre between 11.30-12.00pm for a 12.00pm lunch on Day 1 (Monday 1 July).
  • Earlier drop offs / room access at the hotel can be arranged if really required, but we’d prefer if you just arranged to meet us at the arts centre.
  • We’ll look after you until finishing at Midlands Arts Centre on Wednesday 3 July at 12.00pm, when you’ll make your own way home.
  • Please note we are not currently intending to provide lunch on the last day (this may change finances permitting).
  • Transport is provided from MAC to the hotel (Day 1), back and forth (Day 2) and to MAC (Day 3).
  • There will be an evening programme of activities on 1 and 2 July which we are still firming up.
  • We will refund travel costs for one delegate from each funded organisation. When booking travel please consider the environment (i.e. please use trains where possible) and please do try to find the cheapest route balanced with that environmental concern.

  • Embedding legal rights in a community: Case study of the partnership between Central England Law Centre (CELC) and Grapevine, activating and enforcing the rights of disabled and disenfranchised people in Coventry. Workshop around effective partnerships

9.15 – 13.00 Part 1: Strategic litigation, putting communities in the driving seat

  • Case study: Public Interest Law Centre (PILC) on the Aylesbury estate litigation
  • Panel and group workshops: Lessons on building strategic legal cases with communities

13.00 – 14.00 Lunch

14.00 – 17.00 Part 2: Non-litigation strategies

  • Case study: Greater Manchester Law Centre (GMLC) and the Housing Justice Network, working with campaigners to increase and develop non-legal structures to tackle systemic injustice
  • Exercise: Power mapping
  • Panel: Influencing law and policy

Evening: Food and a fun, with community music workshop from Mamajay Pamoja and One Nation studios, winner of the Connecting Communities Award 2021.

9.15 – 12.00 We are consulting on the last half day session. Please tell us which of these sessions you would like us to run (you’ll be able to select and give views on the residential booking form):

  • Abolitionist or reformist?
    Current positioning and action from and within organisations often falls into these two camps. How can we strategise to progress these camps together?
  • Tackling the big issues of the day.
    This session would identify the big issues and how community partnerships will help us tackle them.
  • Imagine a Government that listened to you
    What if the Government was responsive to civil society and rights based criticisms? What could we do in such a world and how would we operate?
  • Your idea – is there something else you would like the residential final session to focus on?
