Four 90-minute webinars and a workshop via Zoom on how to influence the design of policies to make them fairer and create impact.

How can the voluntary sector, and civil society more widely, effectively influence to impact policy? How should you work with key stakeholders to help ensure policies are designed fairly, and are better informed by lived experience?

All sessions will be recorded for post event access.

This training is for

  • Community activists, campaigners and user-led organisations 
  • Charities and NGOs 
  • Policy researchers and advisors 
  • Anyone involved in influencing and campaigning with a legal dimension

Ticket pricing

  • Standard ticket: £99 – for organisations with a turnover more than £400,000  
  • Low-cost tickets: £75 – for organisations with funding up to £400,000 (or thereabouts)  
  • Contributory ticket: £30 – for organisations with funding less than £100,00 
  • Student ticket: £20 – for those in full-time education and booking using a valid university email address  
  • Free ticket: If you do no have a training budget or are applying independently and are unable to pay, please email a brief explanation to [email protected] to request a free ticket.

Building relationships to influence parliament and legislation 

It is not only what you know, but also who you know and who you are able to build relationships with. This session explores effective approaches to developing relationships with parliamentarians, and how to inform, engage, and align MPs and peers with your goals.

Tuesday 24 March, 14:30-16:00 

What do you want the law to be? Translating policy asks into action 

How do you translate ambitions for social or legal change into law? One effective way is through drafting amendments. This session will look at how and when to table amendments to maximise their chances of success. It will also consider both proactive and reactive policy engagement, such as submitting written evidence and providing oral evidence to committees, as integral to identifying and advancing opportunities to achieve policy goals.

How do you influence the influencers? Partnering or aligning with better-resourced organisations that already hold influence is one way to amplify your voice, build alliances, and work collaboratively. Our panellists will discuss how to work effectively with influencers or their organisations, and how they position themselves to exert influence.

Wednesday 25 March, 14:00-15:30 

Creating platforms for lived experience 

How can we platform people’s lived experiences, and the individual themselves, ethically and practically? This session looks at how lived experience can better inform and influence policy development. Panellists will explore approaches to involving and empowering people through participation in research and advocacy, including how your organisation can support often vulnerable individuals, through trauma-informed practices and appropriate safeguards.
