Published: 26th March 2020 The Home Office issued a notice on the gov.uk website (24 March) that immigration bail reporting conditions have been temporarily suspended while it reviews how frequently people should report during the COVID-19 pandemic. This follows letters from Migrants Organise and Helen Bamber Foundation that set out the pressing public health reasons for the immediate suspension of reporting conditions. PLP assisted the charities to make this request, which was supported by dozens of organisations from across the migrants’ rights sector. The letters warned that if the Home Office did not immediately suspend reporting conditions, Migrants Organise and Helen Bamber Foundation would consider bringing legal action. In January 2020, Migrants Organise published an in-depth report that details the failings in the immigration bail reporting regime, including the mental and physical health impacts of inappropriate reporting conditions on vulnerable migrants. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, PLP had been working with closely with Migrants Organise and Helen Bamber Foundation to address systemic unfairness in the regime. PLP assisted Migrants Organise with their report and has acted for clients referred to us by the charities to challenge unlawfully imposed reporting conditions. PLP will continue to work with Migrants Organise and Helen Bamber Foundation to monitor the situation and ensure that migrants are not unlawfully put at unnecessarily increased risk of being infected with COVID-19.
